NPP demands reason for Betty's resignation

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the government must officially explain to Ghanaians why the Education Minister Betty Mould-Iddrisu decided to resign from government.

Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu tendered in her resignation letter at the Presidency on Monday.

Some senior government officials have told Citi News that the former attorney general decided to resign because she does not want to distract the “Better Ghana Agenda” of the ruling NDC.

The NPP, led by minority leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, in December 2011 called on President Mills to dismiss Mould-Iddrisu saying her negligence led to the state paying GH¢58 million to NDC financier Alfred Woyome.

However, speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, the Communications Director of the NPP, Nana Akomea said in order for the NPP to be completely satisfied with the resignation, the Presidency must explain whether the resignation is tied to the controversial Woyome judgment debt saga.

“We need to be told to make our satisfaction complete, we need to be told why she has resigned. If it is because of the Woyome issue we need to be told,” he said.

Nana Akomea added that “she is working as the Minister of Education and there is no controversy. The controversy has involved her work at the ministry of justice so if that is the reason why she is resigning we need to be told very clearly. ”

Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu had been under pressure to resign over her handling of the payment of about GhC58 million to Mr. Woyome, while she was attorney general.

The former A-G has been accused of failing to defend the case brought against the state by Mr. Woyome resulting in the payment of GH¢58 million judgment debt paid to the NDC financier.
